Everyone thinks the assistive technology problem is a screen reader problem. They're wrong. The real crisis is that 90% of people who need assistive technology don't have access to it (World Health Organization). While we in the tech bubble argue about JAWS versus NVDA, billions of people are locked out entirely. That's the story we should be telling, and it changes what we should build and buy.
The Screen Reader Bubble
Look, I love screen readers. They're the closest thing we have to magic: software that turns pixels into speech or braille. In WebAIM's 2024 Screen Reader User Survey, 91.3% of respondents said they use one on a mobile device (WebAIM). And among desktop users, NVDA and JAWS are neck and neck—40.5% primary use for JAWS, 37.7% for NVDA (WebAIM). But here's the uncomfortable truth: these surveys only capture people who already have access to a computer and a screen reader. The 90% without access aren't in any survey.
Access Isn't a Nice-to-Have—It's a Human Right
The World Health Organization estimates that over 2.5 billion people currently need assistive technology, and that number is projected to hit 3.5 billion by 2050 (World Health Organization). That's not a niche issue. Yet access can be as low as 3% in some settings (World Health Organization). Consider wheelchairs: of the 80 million people worldwide who need one, only 5–35% have access, depending on the country (World Health Organization). Or eyeglasses: two out of three people in low-income countries who need them don't have them (World Health Organization). These aren't exotic gadgets—they're basic tools for dignity and participation.
Why We're Obsessed with the Wrong Metrics
Our industry's obsession with screen reader market share is a distraction. The WebAIM Million 2026 analysis found that 95.9% of home pages have detectable WCAG 2 failures, averaging 56.1 errors per page (WebAIM Million). That's a real problem. But even if we fixed every website tomorrow, the access gap would remain. The European Accessibility Act applies from 28 June 2025 (European Accessibility Act), and the U.S. Department of Justice has adopted WCAG 2.1 Level AA for state and local governments (ADA.gov). These are important steps, but they focus on digital content. Meanwhile, the global disabled and elderly assistive technology market is projected to reach about $82 billion by 2030 (World Health Organization)—yet that market is failing the people it's supposed to serve.

The Counter-Argument: "But Digital Access Is Where the Action Is"
I hear this all the time: "We can't solve global poverty, but we can make our website accessible." Fair enough. Digital accessibility is actionable, measurable, and legally required. But it's not the whole story. The U.S. Department of Justice guidance says inaccessible web content denies people with disabilities equal access (ADA.gov), and that's true. Yet consider hearing loss: globally, 1.5 billion people have hearing loss, but hearing aid production meets less than 10% of global demand (World Health Organization). Unaddressed hearing loss costs the global economy US$ 980 billion annually (World Health Organization). That's not a web accessibility problem—it's a supply chain problem. If we only focus on screen readers, we're ignoring the 90%.
What We Should Do Instead
Here's my recommendation, and it's not gentle: stop treating screen reader compatibility as the gold standard of accessibility. Instead, design for the full range of assistive technology, and advocate for universal access. The WHO's Priority Assistive Products List (APL) includes 50 products selected based on widespread need and impact (World Health Organization (GATE initiative))—that's a better starting point than any screen reader. If you're a developer, learn NVDA (it's free and open source, translated into over 55 languages, used in more than 175 countries—NV Access) but also learn about low-tech solutions. If you're a manager, budget for accessibility audits, but also support global initiatives like the WHO's Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE), which focuses on people, policy, products, provision, and personnel (World Health Organization (GATE initiative)).
- Advocate for universal access to hearing aids, eyeglasses, and wheelchairs.
- Design digital products that work with a variety of assistive tech, not just one screen reader.
- Support policies that fund assistive tech for low-income countries.
Quick tip: When testing your website, use NVDA (free) and VoiceOver (built into Apple devices) to cover the most common screen readers, but also test with a keyboard only and with a braille display if you can.
The Bottom Line
The single most important thing to remember is this: assistive technology is not a luxury for a few; it's a fundamental need for over 2.5 billion people, and 90% of them are going without. If we keep arguing about which screen reader to test with, we're missing the point. Let's widen the lens and fight for access.
